If you participated last year, basically this year is the same, except for a rule that you must comment on any 2021 Heart Attack gifts you have received before you can a) sign up for the 2022 round, and b) be considered Triple Crown eligible.
If you didn't participate last year, no worries! This is going to be pretty much like every other exchange you've done before, except that you have to sign up with at least one safety fandom, aka a fandom that takes 5 hours or less to consume.
Also, check out the
triplecrownofexchanges to see some fun prizes you can get for completing this exchange as well as two other 10k exchanges (
fffx and
ficinabox). For creator support, the Screamening, and other Heart Attack-relevant community stuff, check out the
Triple Crown Discord.
NOMINATIONS
NOMINATIONS
Tagset • canon promo post
TIMING
Starting November 1, each person can nominate 7 fandoms per person with up to 10
relationships (or character & none) per fandom.
Nominations will close temporarily on November 5 so tagmods can clean everything
up and get the tagset looking decent.
When signups open on November 6, people can nominate 3 more fandoms if they
really want to, but at that point, please don't nominate a fandom unless you
intend to request it. Signups and the tagset will close on Saturday, November
13, 2021 at 9:59pm EST (countdown here).
FORMAT
You can nominate fandoms and relationships. The / (as in "Barry Allen/Iris
West") indicates a sexual and/or romantic relationship. The & (as in "Barry
Allen & Iris West") indicates a platonic relationship. "& none" (as in "Iris
West & None") indicates a fic that is about one character rather than a
relationship. You can also request "Worldbuilding & None". Please disambiguate
every relationship by adding "(Your Fandom Name Here)" at the end of it.
Crossovers should go under Crossover Fandom. Relationship example: "Peter Pevensie (Narnia - Lewis)/Sansa Stark (Game of Thrones TV)". If you want a character from fandom A in a fusion or crossover with fandom B, you can format it like this: "Peter Pevensie (Narnia - Lewis) & Worldbuilding (Game of Thrones TV)".
Almost all fandoms are eligible for the tagset. Creator’s Choice of Fandom will
not be in the tagset, and we prefer specific canons over All Media Type fandoms,
but we will evaluate those as they come.
To be frank, tagmods are fine with people socking up if they are desperate to
request 10 fandoms and offer 10 different fandoms, as long as they: 1)
disambiguate their relationships 2) check for whether their fandoms are safeties
or not, and 3) keep in mind that every single fandom has to be double-checked by
tagmods to be sure it is or is not a safety, which will take time.
SAFETY FANDOMS
Please keep in mind: you will need to sign up with at least one safety
fandom. A safety fandom is a fandom that can be consumed in five hours
or less. It should also be available in English or with an English translation.
This is designed to prevent the untimely death of our pinch hitters, who will
have exactly one week to write 10k and who therefore cannot spend 20+ hours
consuming a new canon for a pinch hit. Thanks to the vidding exchange equinox_exchange for this
very useful idea!
Please nominate your safety fandom with [SAFETY] next to it. For example, "Mad
Max: Fury Road (2015) [SAFETY]".
The following qualify as safety fandoms:
- Original Work
- Any standalone movie, TV episode, TV season, youtube video, music video,
letsplay, miniseries, etc, which is under 5 hours (300 minutes). For example,
Fleabag season 1 is eligible as a safety fandom because it is less than 300
minutes total and it can be viewed, understood, and written about on its own.
Iron Man 3 would not be eligible as a safety fandom because it requires you to
also watch Iron Man 1 and Iron Man 2 to understand. But Iron Man 1 would be
eligible as a safety fandom.
- Any video game whose main story takes less than 5 hours to play. You can
check it at howlongtobeat.com.
- Any comic book run with 30 comics or less.
- Any manga with 30 chapters or less at the time of nominations.
- Any book that is 100k words or less. You can get a wordcount estimate at readinglength.com.
- Any painting, photograph, map, etc (which is publicly available for viewing
online)
- Any song or album of music under 300 minutes total.
- Please comment if you think one of your fandoms should be a safety, but it
is not in one of the mediums listed above. If it is a fixed length fandom under
5 hours, in English or with an English translation available, and reasonably
widely available (that is to say, not an obscurely out of print type thing) then
it should be good.
A note on translations: fan translations into English are acceptable, but please
double-check to make sure that your fan translations cover your whole fandom (so
for example, if you have a 25 chapter manga but the fan translation only covers
the first 9 chapters at the time of nominations, please do not nominate that as
a safety.)
A note on book series: If you are a fan of a series, you may nominate both the
first book in the series (if you're willing to get fanfiction based only off of
that one book!) and the entire series. For example, you can nominate both “The
Wee Free Men - Terry Pratchett [SAFETY]” and “Discworld - Pratchett”. However,
if you use this in order to craft a signup that's three requests of only the
same pairing, rendering your whole signup a one-pairing signup, I will transform
into a Canada goose and fly to your location to fight you physically.
The following do not qualify as safety fandoms:
- Crossover Fandom
- A non-English-language fandom with no English language translation available
(because our pool of pinch hitter writers is primarily English language
speaking)
- A fandom that is extremely difficult to get ahold of or consume. For
example, a book that went out of print long ago, is not available as an ebook,
and can only be procured by bidding for it on eBay.
- Anything without a fixed limit, such as RPF (because in RPF the canon itself
is an ambiguous collection of interviews, photos, videos, social media, etc).
If you notice a fandom that should be marked a safety but isn't, or a fandom
that is marked as a safety but shouldn't, please do email, message, or comment.
We will happily review any extra information you have :)
UMBRELLA FANDOMS
- Please nominate the DCEU as one fandom.
- Please nominate the MCU as one fandom, the Marvel Netflix stuff under The Defenders (TV) as its own separate fandom, ditto Agent Carter (TV), Agents of SHIELD (TV), The Falcon And The Winter Soldier (TV), and What If... (TV). For What If..., you can nominate specific versions of the characters (e.g. "Dark!Stephen Strange & None (What If...) if you want.
- Please nominate Star Wars as Star Wars Original Trilogy, Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, Star Wars Visions, etc. Please put crossovers between them under Crossover Fandom (e.g. "Anakin Skywalker (SWPT) & Rose Tico (SWST)"
- Please nominate Doctor Who relationships under existing subfandoms (Doctor Who (1963) Doctor Who (2005), Torchwood, Class, and Sarah Jane Adventures). Please put crossovers between them under Crossover Fandom (e.g. “The Doctor (Any Doctor Who Subfandom/The Master (Dhawan) (Doctor Who 2005)”)
- Please the core Arrowverse shows (Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Legends of
Tomorrow, Black Lightning, and Batwoman) under Arrowverse. Characters from the
broader DC live action multiverse who have appeared in an Arrowverse show may be
nominated under either Arrowverse or their home canon (which will stay separate)
SIGNUPS
SIGNUPS
When signups open (from November 6 to November 13) you should be able to sign up on AO3.
You must request at least 3 different fandoms. You must request at least one safety fandom (see above for more info on safety fandoms). You must offer at least 3 different fandoms, and at least one relationship per fandom. At most, you can request 10 and offer 10.
Please be sure to include a list of Do Not Wants (DNWs) in the Details box! Unless you genuinely are fine with receiving any kind of fic, in which case please say "No DNWs". DNWs should be specific. For instance, do not ask for "nothing icky" because it's very hard to know what that means. DNWs should also not force the author to only write one thing. For instance, do not DNW "fic where my chosen character isn't pregnant" because it's unfair to try and make your writer do one very narrow type of fic (in the example, pregnancy fic).
Likes, prompts, ship thoughts, general screaming, etc. is optional and can go into the Details box or into a letter which you can link in the "Optional Dear Author Letter URL" box.
Please keep in mind that optional details ARE OPTIONAL—this means that a writer only needs to include at least one of your requested relationships and avoid your DNWs. Writers are not obliged to write out a specific prompt or plot for you.
If nobody requests anything you offer, we will email you so that you can add offers. If you do not reply to the mod email within 24 hours an hour (mod note: this was 24 last year and is 1 this year), your signup will be deleted so that we can get assignments out on time.
If nobody offers what you request, you will become a pinch hit.
If you are open to receiving a 25-panel, 10-page comic, you may opt into that in your Optional Details box. If you are an artist, and you only want to create a comic, sign up normally and email ashling.and.hurricanes@gmail.com so that I know to only match you to people who opt into art.
ASSIGNMENTS
ASSIGNMENTS
For your assignment, please write a 10k fic for at least one of your recipient's requested relationships. If your recipient requests a 10 page, 25-panel comic, you can draw that for at least one of your recipient's requested relationships. Please respect your recipient's DNWs.
If you can't finish your assignment in time, please default. There is no penalty for defaulting before the deadline. However, if you attempt to publish an unfinished assignment before deadline, or if you copypaste the word pickle in 10,000 times (or similar), that will lead to a one-year ban.
PINCH HITS
PINCH HITS
Pinch hits will be posted to the dreamwidth. You can claim them by commenting on the pinch hit post (comments will be screened). If there are outstanding pinch hits when the collection is supposed to open, the collection opening will be postponed.
If you did not write your assignment, you will not become a pinch hit.
If person A is supposed to write a gift for person B, but defaults, and person C already wrote a gift for person B, then person B will not become a pinch hit.
TREATS
Please only post treats that are 10k. If you have a treat that is less than 10k, you can post it in the short treat collection. Anything posted in the short treat collection will not count towards Triple Crown.
OTHER RULES & VILLAIN ORIGIN STORY
OTHER RULES
This is an 18+ exchange. I understand that underage writers are a part of fandom—I know I sure was, and I don't want to be a hypocrite! But the thing is, if a participant under the age of 18 signed up and requested smut, it just wouldn't be fair to their prospective creator. I am not checking the personal information of everyone who signs up, but if I somehow found out that an underage person has signed up, I would have to delete their signup. This has never happened to me in any exchange I've run, and I hope it never does.
In most cases, mod will try to communicate first to make sure it isn't an accident & to see if it can be fixed. That said, mod reserves the right to act if any of the following happens:
1. somebody publishes an incomplete fic
2. somebody publishes the word pickle 10,000 times (or similar)
3. somebody creates a fanwork containing one of their recip's DNWs
4. somebody writes spite fic
5. somebody behaves like an asshole towards other participants and/or mod (for example, if you were to email mod every hour on the hour demanding mod answer your question immediately, that would qualify)
VILLAIN ORIGIN STORY
If you would like to be part of the next villain origin story, you can join the EAD (Exchanges After Dark) discord server here. (Be warned, though, it's a 18+ server, and there's sometimes NSFW or potentially triggering content discussed, so navigate at your own risk.)
