Tagset nominations will open on November 1 and close temporarily on November 6 for cleanup. They will then reopen until signups close on November 14. You can nominate fandoms and relationships. The / (as in "Barry Allen/Iris West") indicates a sexual and/or romantic relationship. The & (as in "Barry Allen & Iris West") indicates a platonic relationship. "& none" (as in "Iris West & None") indicates a fic that is about one character rather than a relationship. You can also request Worldbuilding & None. Please disambiguate every relationship by adding "(Your Fandom Name Here)" at the end of it.

Please keep in mind: you will need to sign up with at least one safety fandom. A safety fandom is a fandom that can be consumed in five hours or less. This is designed to prevent the untimely death of our pinch hitters, who will have exactly one week to write 10k and who therefore cannot spend 20 hours consuming a new canon for a pinch hit.

Please nominate your safety fandom with [SAFETY] next to it. For example, "Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) [SAFETY]".

The following qualify as safety fandoms:
  • Any standalone movie, TV episode, TV season, youtube video, music video, letsplay, miniseries, etc, which is under 5 hours (300 minutes). For example, Fleabag season 1 is eligible as a safety fandom because it is less than 300 minutes total and it can be viewed, understood, and written about on its own.
  • Any video game whose main story takes less than 5 hours to play. You can check it at howlongtobeat.com.
  • Any comic book run with 30 comics or less (as someone who doesn't know about comics, I am going off of the estimate of one friend who says it takes 10 minutes to read one comic & I'm open to feedback here).
  • Any book that is 100k words or less. You can get a wordcount estimate at readinglength.com.
  • Any painting, photograph, map, etc (which is publicly available for viewing online)
  • Original Work
  • Please comment if you think one of your fandoms should be a safety, but it is not in one of the mediums listed above.
Crossover Fandom is NOT a safety fandom.

If you are a fan of a series, you may nominate both the first item in the series (if you're willing to get fanfiction based only off of that one item!) and the entire series. For example, you can nominate both "The Wee Free Men - Terry Pratchett [SAFETY]" and "Discworld - Pratchett".
Regarding megafandoms:
  • Please nominate the DCEU as one fandom.
  • Please nominate the MCU as one fandom.
  • Please nominate the Marvel Netflix stuff under The Defenders (TV)
  • Please nominate Star Wars as Star Wars Original Trilogy, Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, etc. Please put crossovers between them under Crossover Fandom (e.g. "Anakin Skywalker (SWPT) & Rose Tico (SWST)"
  • Please nominate the core Arrowverse shows (Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, and Batwoman) under Arrowverse. Characters from the broader DC live action multiverse who have appeared in an Arrowverse show may be nominated under either Arrowverse or their home canon (which will stay separate)

Starting November 1, each person can nominate 7 fandoms per person with up to 10 relationships (or character & none) per fandom.

Nominations will close temporarily on November 6 so tagmods can clean everything up and get the tagset looking decent.

When signups open on November 7, people can nominate 3 more fandoms if they really want to, but at that point, please don't nominate a fandom unless you intend to request it.

To be frank, tagmods are fine with people socking up if they are desperate to request 10 fandoms and offer 10 different fandoms, as long as they: 1) disambiguate their relationships 2) check for whether their fandoms are safeties or not, and 3) keep in mind that every single fandom has to be double-checked by tagmods to be sure it is or is not a safety, which will take time.

Is mythology/folklore eligible as a safety fandom if there's a copy of some version online? I'm thinking of the Hymn to Demeter (Hades and Persephone); this online translation clocks at about 6k.

Hi there! I know it's a little early, but I wanted to ask about a safety fandom that I believe is an edge case so I can plan what fandoms I want to request based on your answer.

When most people think about the canon "Sarazanmai", they think about the anime, which is under the 5 hour requirement (I'm going to round up by a few minutes per episode for ease - 11 episodes x 25 minutes = 275 minutes, which is 25 minutes under the maximum). However, in my requests, I often reference the lesser-consumed supplementary media, which include a single volume manga, an in-character Twitter account (takes 1-2 hours to read), and light novels (395 pages total). I'd be very happy with just the anime or even just one of the supplementary media as a safety fandom (for example, a fic based on just the Twitter, or a fic based on just the anime).

Since the fandom is so small, it's standard within the fandom for fics based off of the manga or Twitter or LNs to be placed underneath "Sarazanmai (Anime)". I believe each individual piece of media would technically count as a "safety fandom", but all together they do not.

How would you want me to nominate this, and would this qualify as a safety fandom?

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question; I'm asking completely in earnest.

Given your example of Fleabag s1 as an acceptable safety, would s1 of another show, also under 300 minutes, be acceptable? I am thinking of What We Do in the Shadows specifically; there is a second season already (as there is with Fleabag).

What will the limitations on number of nominations be? For instance, will we be nominating 4 fandoms perr person with 1 to 10 relationships (or character & none) per fandom? Trying to plan ahead since this one is going to move so fast.

That clears up my question perfectly! :) Thank you so much! I'm very excited for this, but my blood pressure has some concerns, lol.

Hey! I'm thinking ahead on this and wondering if it's okay to put safety options within larger canons as well as having exclusive safety fandoms? Just to give potential matches some additional options in case they don't vibe with my main safety.

For example, I have a game that's under 3 hours ready to nominate as a safety fandom; but if I requested a larger fandom (specifically an MCU-based one), would it be okay to say, "I'm requesting this broadly if you already know the canon, but if you want to use this as a safety option instead of my offered safety fandom, I'm happy for you to watch the first 2 movies in the series and/or two otherwise linked movies and do plot divergence or pre-canon fic from there"?

There's a couple other canons where I could give them a couple primer pieces that come in at under 5 hours if they're unfamiliar and aren't interested in my main safety option, but MCU is easiest to explain!

It does! Don't worry, I'm not aiming to request anything at the end of a series haha - I'm just trying to figure out how to give any potential matches as many options as possible! Thank you very much :)

Hi, I would like to nominate Blaseball as a safety fandom. On AO3 it's listed as a video game, but it's not playable in the traditional videogame sense. The canon, such as it is, can be entirely consumed via the wiki, with supplemental material on twitter via community-run accounts. The game itself can be found at the Blaseball site, though it is currently taking an extended hiatus ("the Grand Siesta"). I am happy to elaborate further if necessary, though I've attempted to be brief for the sake of the comment box.

eta: Do you have a preference for how the Stargate franchise should be nominated? Should it be as AMT or with individual shows?

re: Stargate -- it should be fine either way. There are characters who cross over, but the main cast for each series tends to be standalone. I personally prefer to nominate all as one AMT fandom, but I know there are several others who prefer the other way. I'd default to nominating separately without guidance from the mod, though.

For Blaseball -- The Beginner's Guide to Blaseball (an out-of-universe explanation), Blaseball (an in-universe explanation), and the main pages linked at the bottom of those articles would constitute the canon, in my opinion. There's more in-depth stuff (such as official twitter accounts for each team), but for an overview of the canon, I think that should be sufficient. I can compile a more complete link list and send it to you directly if you'd like.

Hey, mod! I wanted to ask about nominating a set of adaptations of one fandom under an umbrella tag. I was hoping to nominate the tag Midori | Shoujo Tsubaki - All Media Types [SAFETY] (or perhaps Midori | Shoujo Tsubaki - Any Media Type [SAFETY], if that would be more clear?)

Essentially, there are three versions of the exact same story. They have that non-English-fandom problem of being localized under a bunch of different names, none of which are what fans actually call them. (Which is usually "Shoujo Tsubaki" or "Midori.")

1. A short manga, originally titled "Shoujo Tsubaki" and localized as "Mr. Arashi's Amazing Freak Show."

2. A 50-minute OVA, originally titled "Chika Gentou Gekiga: Shoujo Tsubaki" and localized as "Midori."

3. A 1.5 hr live-action movie, originally titled "Shoujo Tsubaki" and localized as "The Camellia Girl."

You could theoretically consume all three in under 5 hours, so the length isn't an issue. Rather, I know mods tend to object to AMT designations, but I'd truly like to communicate that I'd be okay with fic based on any version of this canon. The manga and OVA are basically identical, and while the live action movie had to tone down the sex and on-screen violence to get released, it's still very much the same story.

Would Pacific Rim Uprising count as a safety fandom? It's a direct sequel to the first movie, set 10 years later, and shares the world, lore, and some (3) characters, but it has an opening monologue that explains what you need to know from the first movie, so you could watch it as a standalone movie without seeing the first one.

Pride & Prejudice seems to be nominated as a safety fandom but it's too long.

Word count is 120,000 and a bit more.

https://www.dogobooks.com/pride-and-prejudice/book-review/1983945722 has the correct count for a website. I verified through a calibre plugin.

Hi! I am wondering about how to nominate a specific comic that is part of a larger fandom, and whether or not it might count as a safety fandom.

Angel and Faith is a Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off comic. It doesn't spin off from the show, per se, but rather it is a spin-off of the Buffy comics universe. The first 'season' of Angel and Faith (there are 2 seasons... to make things more confusing, the 2nd season is called "season 10") is 25 issues, and it is a cohesive standalone arc. One would get a deeper understanding of the story if they've consumed other Buffy media, but as it has a completely different setting (London, rather than California) and a supporting cast of characters that are unique to the Angel and Faith comic series, I think it could feasibly be read and enjoyed without a greater knowledge of the fandom.

Could this one season of 25 issues count as a safety fandom ("Angel and Faith (Comics 2011)"), or would this be more of a 'nominating Iron Man 3' situation?

If it would not count as a safety, how would you prefer I nominate it? Under the Buffy Comics fandom umbrella? I would hesitate to nominate under "Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV)" as some the characters I'd want did not exist in the TV series.

I hope I phrased this all in a way in that makes sense. ;o;

So, I nommed Phasmophobia. Howlongtobeat says it takes over ten hours, but that's really missing the point of the game. I've spent hours playing it and even more hours watching other people play it and honestly I didn't think it even had a win state.

Phasmophobia is, at its core, a modular multiplayer ghost hunting simulator. You get groups of up to four people together and go to various randomly generated hauntings to document and classify the ghost in each place. There is basically no plot to speak of, other than the (also randomly generated) circumstances of each haunting. The only connective tissue between cases is whatever you the player puts in (and whatever ghost hunting equipment you buy with your paycheck from each case)

This means that while technically it may take many hours to 'beat' the game, anyone who wanted to write for Phasmophobia could play or watch someone else play maybe a couple cases to get a feel for the game and how it plays out hauntings.

http://www.campuschroniclenews.com/phasmophobia-review/ - A (sadly unflattering) review of the game that cites the randomly generated nature of the levels

https://phasmophobia.fandom.com/wiki/Ghosts - A page from the wiki that covers the details of the randomly generated ghosts
